Refreshing Your New Year’s Resolutions

Key Takeaways

  • When we start something new, it’s common to find that, as time goes on, entropy sets in.
  • To combat entropy, try resetting your goals every 90 days.
  • Now would be a good time to revisit New Year’s resolutions, as we approach the 90 day mark.

There’s a physical law called entropy and it’s basically a measure of disorder – everything declines into disorder over time. As soon as you wash your car, it rains. After you clean your house, you find dirty dishes and laundry piling up. You file papers away, but the next day there’s a new stack forming. Everything eventually turns to disorder.

Thinking about entropy is a good way to look at how we make our successes in life – how we reach our goals, pushing through set-backs to attain what we want. There are a number of different ways to learn how to do this, and The Strategic Coach® Program is one such way. They have meetings every 90 days, which is key because 90 days is about the amount of time that passes when entropy starts to kick in and causes us to need a refresh. And that refresh allows us to move on to a higher level and continue for another 90 days.

The Strategic Coach even does something called a 30 Day Sprint, because they realize that half of the work is done within the first 30 days. It takes us the remaining 60 days to complete the work because it’s human nature to do really well at the beginning, but then lose steam as time goes on.

Looking where we are in 2020, it’s been about 90 days since the start of the year. If you set some New Year’s resolutions, you may be finding yourself wanting to give up or you may start becoming frustrated, losing sight of your original goals. Don’t be surprised if you find that’s the case—instead, think about refreshing your resolutions every 90 days.

There are a number of ways to do this. You can set some time aside to reset your goals, think about the successes you want to achieve, the dangers and obstacles you want to eliminate, and the opportunities you want to seize.

However you choose to do this, just be aware that entropy sets in and be ready to address it every 90 days. Whether that’s with a New Year’s resolution, or any goal you set for yourself throughout the year, this is a great way to stay on course. Get back to that higher level and reach the successes you set out to achieve. Until next time, enjoy.
