It’s time to say goodbye to 2016 and welcome with open arms the New Year, 2017! Or if you are a little traumatized by what 2016 had to offer, perhaps just a firm handshake and a scrutinizing look towards 2017.
There are a lot of Year in Review lists out there. You’ve got your standard lists offered by all the news outlets of course, the lists of top songs, movies, TV shows, etc. There’s lists of top YouTube videos and Tweets, and yes, even cat videos. 2016 was definitely a year to remember, so we thought we’d share with you Google’s “Year in Search 2016”. It contains a video as well as lists of the top searches of the year in different categories.
The news headlines of the past year can often paint a bleak picture of where we are today. However, if you take a closer look in your local papers and communities, stories of hope abound. For every negative headline that grabs our attention, there are plenty of other stories of love, community, and selflessness that are all around you.
“17-year-old high school student visits a different WWII Veteran every day after school to record their stories and thank them for their service”
“Bus driver buys hats and gloves for students who can’t afford them”
“After 89-year-old is evicted, a neighbor buys back her home”
“Couple brings gift of hearing to impaired across the globe”
“Local restaurant gets youth off streets, into kitchen.”
There are stories like these across the globe every day. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things to help others. And if you don’t feel there is in your community, then make your own good news. Volunteer with a charity, mentor a student, give of your time or your money, but don’t succumb to the negative news that is sure to be in front of you every day.
Here’s to a happy and healthy New Year!
Until next time, the team at Your Grown Up Money.
